Our mission

Enable adult students to achieve their individual literacy goals by building practical English language reading, conversation, and comprehension skills through a partnership with trained volunteer tutors.

Opportunities

Become a Volunteer Tutor

Join us by becoming a literacy, ESL, or a math tutor…give the gifts of reading, communicating, or calculating to someone who lives or works in your community.  You will be able to tutor virtually or in person at a time that works for both you and your student.

We ask tutors to commit to tutoring for at least one year and to meet at least two hours per week year-round (vacations are ok).

How you help

You can transform lives by volunteering as a tutor in reading, math, or digital skills—attend a 30-minute virtual information session via our website to get trained and matched with a learner. Make a tax-deductible donation online, by mail, or through stock gifts to fund over 20,000 hours of annual instruction for more than 200 adults. Attend our Ex Libris fundraising dinner or share our stories on social media to raise awareness and support adult literacy in Oakland County.

About us

The Oakland Literacy Council believes that all people have a fundamental right to literacy. With support from our funders, we pair trained, compassionate tutors with adult learners until they become proficient readers, writers, and communicators.
